Why Do Many People's Clay Dishes Break Quickly? Are You Making These Mistakes?
You’ve bought a clay yogurt pot or a beautiful ceramic-finish clay bowl with great enthusiasm, but it cracks after only 2-3 days of use. It’s natural to feel upset. That’s when we think—“Clay items are useless, just a waste of money!” But did you know that in most cases, it’s not the clay’s fault, but rather due to some common mistakes in our usage?
There are 3 main reasons behind clay items cracking suddenly. Let’s see if any apply to you.
1. A Huge Mistake During Washing
We often hold regular steel dishes under the kitchen tap to wash them quickly. But for clay items, this can be harmful, especially if it was on the stove just a moment ago or contained hot food. For clay items, there is something called “Thermal Shock.” If you suddenly put very cold water on something very hot, the particles inside the clay cannot adjust, and that’s when it cracks.
2. Rushing While Cooking on the Stove
Many think that since it’s ceramic or pottery, they can apply as much heat as they want in the oven or on the stove. When cooking in a clay pot or pan, the fire’s heat must be increased following a “slow and steady” policy. If you suddenly use a high flame, the clay at the bottom will become very hot but stay cold at the top. This uneven temperature causes the clay to crack.
3. Not Following “Seasoning” or New Care Instructions
Many do not follow the Usage Instructions we recommend before using new clay items (such as soaking in water). As a result, the clay’s pores remain dry, and they easily break under the heat of the fire or the weight of the food.
