Is it Harmful to Store Food in Clay Vessels?

Last Edited: February 5, 2026 Awareness & Advice

The question often arises—can all types of food be kept in clay vessels? Or is there a fear of food spoiling if kept in a clay vessel for a long time? Clay vessels are actually much better for food storage than modern plastic boxes.

Benefits of Storing Food in Clay Vessels

  1. Food Doesn’t Spoil: There is a natural movement of air in clay vessels. This reduces the fear of food becoming stuffy and spoiling. Especially for setting yogurt, there’s no alternative to clay vessels.
  2. Maintains pH Balance: As mentioned before, clay is alkaline. So, if food is kept for a long time, it is protected from turning sour.
  3. Natural Filter: When water or liquids are kept in a clay vessel, it can absorb some impure elements.

What Not to Do?

  • If acidic foods (such as lemon or tamarind pickles) are kept in raw clay vessels for too long, they may react with the clay and slightly change its taste. For this, use fired or high-quality finished vessels.
  • When cleaning, do not scrub extra chemical detergents or soaps directly onto the surface of the clay vessel, as the clay may absorb some of those chemicals.
