How Long Do Clay Dishes Last if Used Correctly? You'll Be Surprised!
Clay items have a strange quality—the more love and care you give them, the longer they last. Many ask us, “How long will a clay glass or plate last? Will it be ruined in 2-3 months?” Our answer is simple—you can use it for a lifetime if you wish. Many people I know have 30-40 year old clay pots from their grandmothers in their homes.
So what’s the real secret? Why do some get ruined quickly and others don’t?
The Secret Formula for Increasing Clay’s Lifespan
How long clay dishes last mostly depends on your Care and Maintenance. However, there are some small things the general public doesn’t know:
- Let Them Breathe in the Air: After using clay items, wash and dry them thoroughly in the sun or under a fan so no dampness remains inside. This makes the clay bonding even stronger.
- Stove and Fire Use: If you use clay pots for cooking, don’t change the heat suddenly. Clay pots love to heat up gradually.
- Conditioning with Water: We have explained in our Usage Instructions guide how to soak new clay items in water. Doing this one thing increases the clay’s lifespan manifold.
Changes in Clay Over Time
As clay products age, their brightness might fade slightly, but their quality or the taste of the food actually increases. We call this the “maturity” of the clay. If you have the patience for it to handle high temperatures, clay items won’t disappoint you.
